Ettalong is an Aboriginal word meaning 'place for drinking' (Source: "The Story of the Aboriginal People of the Central Coast of NSW" by F.C. Bennett). Previously unnamed it was gazetted on 12 September 1986. Ettalong is also the name of a Central Coast suburb.
