The music shell was opened in 1972 to commemorate 5 miners who died at Awaba State Coal Mine in October 1966. The poppet head from West Wallsend Colliery was moved to the site in April, 1977 as part of a mining museum on the site. Over the years, as visits to the site declined, the music shell and museum eventually became derelict and were demolished sometime around 2010. The poppet head was saved from the site, and reassembled at Kindyerra Reserve, Argenton, behind the Mines Rescue Station in 2009.
