When coal mining was labour intensive there was not enough housing available for the miners. Some applied to the Mine Manager to build their own houses on land owned by the mining company as this was a company town. When Coal & Allied bought the mine, railway, shipping etc they did not want to be responsible for the housing which was in a poor condition. Houses on the main roads were put on title and sold to the residents. The houses not on title continued to be occupied by the residents but they could not onsell. Today 8 of these houses remain.
