A license was granted 16/4/1890 to David Thomas for the first Cardiff Hotel. The hotel was completely destroyed by fire in February 1894. In 1901 the license was transferred to James Wilson, who rebuilt the hotel at a different location. This photograph is of the second building, and was taken by Ralph Snowball on 26/7/1902 when William Dorrity was licensee. The hotel closed in 1933. Ralph Snowball (1849-1925), was a Newcastle based photographer. His studio was in Lambton, but he travelled extensively throughout the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter Valley region. Snowball used glass negative photography to capture portraits, events, architecture and trains. His work gives insight into Newcastle life in the late 1800s and early 1900s.He died in 1925 and was buried in Sandgate Cemetery.
