ANNIE PHOEBE HETHERINGTON 1918-1954 Annie was born in the old farmhouse (in Swan Street Windale) in 1918, the daughter of Jobie and Phoebe Tarrant. Annie was the only child of the Tarrants and she had a very lonely life in the two farmhouse township. During her younger life Annie had an accident involving a horse and buggy and as a result grew up with a hump on her back. Because of this, Annie never went to school. After her mother's death Annie married a young poultry farmer from Mount Hutton - Arthur George Hetherington in November, 1946. On the day of her wedding the temperature soared to over 100 degrees (40 degrees celsius) and a large bushfire broke out near her home. Her father Jobie did not go to the wedding and stayed home to fight the fire. Annie was driven to the church by a neighbour, Mrs Gore who was the one to give her away. In 1947, the first of her three children was born and they named the son Gordon George. In 1948 her daughter Gloria Ann was born and the last of her children, Clarrie, was born in 1951. Around 1952 Annie opened a fruit and vegetable shop in the front of her farmhouse and sold good quality and reasonably priced greengrocery items. The venture lasted for only about 6 months, because she could not compete with the bigger greengrocery department of the Co-operative Store. Annie's health began to fail and despite medical treatment she very sadly passed away on the 3rd August, 1954 at the age of 36 years. Many people recall Annie with a great deal of fondness and have said that she really deserved a lot better than she received in her short lifetime.
