A view down Gen Street on 26 December 1916 looking towards the first scheduled passenger train to arrive at Belmont. Elements of interest include the surface of the road, the clothing of the period and the two locomotives on the train. The train departed Adamstown with one locomotive but such was the response from the Newcastle people that the train was overloaded and could not make the 1 in 40 grade to the Redhead (Fernleigh) tunnel. Another locomotive had to be obtained from the Hamilton Depot to provide assistance up the grade. Photo. Detail of Lionel Yardy’s photo. From “Adamstown via Fernleigh.”
