William's death and burial are recorded in the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate. The journalist wrote: 'He was an intelligent lad, and a general favourite with all his school fellows. The funeral cortage left the residence of his grandparents at 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon, headed by the Sunday-school scholars of the Free Methodist Church, to which the deceased belonged, followed by the hearse, the sorrowing relatives, and a very large number of friends.' William's grave in West Wallsend Cemetery is a marked with a small marble headstone. The grave is in Row B, near the cemetery gates. His friends and family would have walked around 2km from town to stand at his graveside for the service.
