Toronto Road
Fennell Bay Bridge was built in 1902 by J Ahern. One of the early roads was the Main Road through Quigley's Estate towards Newcastle, often impassable after heavy rain. The Main Road was tar sealed in 1933. In 1983 when the new Main Road, MR217 , also called Toronto Road was built, a section of Old Main Road was closed, but retained.
The new Fennell Bay Bridge was built in 1967. The Council had to abandon their quarry because old mine workings had become exposed. Many Wakefield families use to spend the Christmas holidays at Fennell Bay. An area not far from the Fennell Bay baths was once used for camping and holiday shacks. (Source: NMH 3 May 1973).
