Lake Macquarie History

Paterson Close

Named after William Paterson a miner who was killed in Burwood Colliery in 1901. Paterson Close was built in 1993, and extended by McCloy Pty. Ltd.

Some records show a variation of spelling of this name. William was born in Scotland and the spelling on his birth certificate is Paterson; on his father's birth certificate it is spelt Hector Paterson; Scotland Census records have their names written as Paterson; William and his father both came to Australia in 1901 and on the passenger list both names are recorded as Paterson.

It appears that William and his father's surname was written with a double t only after they came to Australia from Scotland.
