Pit Props and Sleepers : the story of Awaba by Doug Saxon
Awaba is a unique place, it has retained its identity due to isolation and a strong sense of community. Awaba has a rich and interesting history, researched and recorded for the first time by Doug Saxon in 1987
Doug Saxon began writing Pip Props and Sleepers almost by accident. As Principal of Awaba Public School, Doug began teaching a unit of study entitled ‘How Our Way of Life Developed’. Students interviewed a former Principal, Mr. John Hallinan, who served from 1942-1967. The students work and the collection of memorabilia promoted interest in the community, soon Doug and the students had gathered a wealth of interesting material about the Awaba community.
Doug Saxon has generously granted the library permission to share this publication with the community. The book can be viewed as a flip book using page turning software.
