Coal dump at Slack Alley, Catherine Hill Bay

  • Coal dump at Slack Alley, Catherine Hill Bay

    Photo Ref: 25444

This dump of coal had been mined by "scabs' brought in to keep the mining of coal ongoing during an industrial dispute. When the dispute was over, the "feds" refused to touch the coal dump. This was rather annoying for the residents as occassionaly it would spontaneously combust, children would fall in and get burnt and the smoke did dreadful things to the washing on the drying lines. Photograph part of the Spring Collection. Photograph taken November, 1936.
