The ship Niuvakai was loaded at the jetty with coal bound for Fiji. The large amount of gear on deck which had to be cleared before loading could begin, and there was a requirement for customs staff to be present while the ship was along side. This was the last time that there was a direct export of coal from Catherine Hill Bay to an overseas destination. A major weather event known as the Sygma Storm in May 1974, damaged part of the jetty, which had to be rebuilt before coal loading could begin again. The direct export trade from Catherine Hill Bay never resumed. Photograph part of the Armstrong Collection. Circa 1974.
