Original caption: A group of cyclists at the Post Office Hotel, Ida Street, Charlestown. Date unknown but about 1914. The two hotels (Post Office and Charlestown) were popular meeting places for groups of cyclists who were either touring or racing over a set course as it enabled the older men and the spectators to have a drink of beer before setting out on the ride. The bicycles appear to be racing machines - judging from the slim tyres and 'racing handlebars'. All but one of the riders are wearing shorts so it was most likely the start of a road race. No persons identified. Original postcard from the collection of George Durham held by Freda/Ken Laycock. This photograph is one of a collection of images donated by Freda (nee Durham) and Ken Laycock in 1988. The Durham and Laycock families were early residents of the Charlestown area.
