House of Joseph and Ada Jane Durham at Smith St, Charlestown Lake Macquarie NSW. c.1918

  • House of Joseph and Ada Jane Durham at Smith St, Charlestown Lake Macquarie NSW. c.1918

    Photo Ref: 4302

    Creators:

    • Laycock, Mr Ken
    • Laycock, Mrs Freda

Original caption: House in Smith Street, Charlestown (just above the creek which is now part of the extension of Ridley Street) occupied by Joseph and Ada Jane (n Wright) DURHAM from about 1914 to 1938 (when they moved to the house owned by Ada Jane's parents, then deceased, on the corner of Smith and Smart Streets. Like most houses in Charlestown at the time it was built of weatherboard planks over a timber frame (a style of building brougnt to Australia by Americans who came during the goldrushes). It was unusual, especially for its time, in being built on two levels, with two steps from one level to the other. This avoided extensive digging to level the site before building. Note also the elegant sweep of the galvanised-iron roof over the verandah and the two-tone painting of the verandah roofing iron. Original mounted photo, rubber-stamped 'F.T. Durham Charlestown' (eldest son, born Charlestown 1897) held by Freda/Ken Laycock. Probable date about 1918. This photograph is one of a collection of images donated by Freda (nee Durham) and Ken Laycock in 1988. The Durham and Laycock families were early residents of the Charlestown area.
