Original caption: Durham's Garage, originally built and operated by George Durham. Pacific Highway, Charlestown is now Caltex Garage near Newcastle Heights Motel about 1934. Garage was one of two then operating in Charlestown - the other was Pickering's. L to R: (?) Russell (nephew of McMaking), Conrad McMaking then owner, Charlie Jacobs (camped at rear of Durham's house next door), Fred Burch (mechanic). Car and driver unknown. Note hand-operated pumps and multiple brands of petrol, and the price - 1shilling and 9 pence per gallon (about 18 cents per gallon, or about 4 cents per litre on a direct conversion into decimal money!). 'GAS' was the American term - adopted because it was shorter, especially for Neon signs: Mounted original 6" x 4" photo held by Freda Laycock. This photograph is one of a collection of images donated by Freda (nee Durham) and Ken Laycock in 1988. The Durham and Laycock families were early residents of the Charlestown area.
