    Creators:

    • Laycock, Mr Ken
    • Laycock, Mrs Freda

Original caption: Geoff, Maxwell and Ken (with glasses) LAYCOCK (second, eldest and third children of Stan and Mary Laycock). On tennis court built about 1930 by the Laycock family on half their land in Smith Street, Charlestown - alongside site of present school. A house was subsequently built on the land for Molly BOOTH (n. Paterson) after LAYCOCK family left Charlestown June 1937. The ground was levelled on the left (house) side, ashes were put down for drainage and gravel was quarried from a hole near Kahibah railway station. The court was used by some Charlestown residents for a Tennis Club, paying 6 pence (5 cents) per week. As far as Ken Laycock is aware, the only other private tennis court in Charlestown in the 1930-1937 period was that built at the THOMPSON house in Lambton (now Charlestown) Road, and he doesn't think this was used by a Tennis Club. Original 116-size photograph held by Ken Laycock. This photograph is one of a collection of images donated by Freda (nee Durham) and Ken Laycock in 1988. The Durham and Laycock families were early residents of the Charlestown area.
