    Original caption: The BARNES family at their house in Hillsborough (not identified as to location). Date is 1885 as Jane, the mother is in the original and a contemporary photo is pregnant with Florence Margaret BARNES, born at Hillsborough in Feb 1886. Stephen BARNES was a miner at the "Gully Pit", having moved from being an agricultural labourer in the Maitland area a few years earlier to coalmining. He remained a miner until at least the age of 60, when he had his portrait painted from a photograph (painting and photo held by Freda Laycock). L to R: Stephen BARNES, Henry BARNES (grandfather of Freda Laycock), Stephen Richard BARNES (both boys attended Charlestown Public School), Emily Jane BARNES, Jane (n Johnston) BARNES This photograph is one of a collection of images donated by Freda (nee Durham) and Ken Laycock in 1988. The Durham and Laycock families were early residents of the Charlestown area.
