The memorial is a sandstone pillar, topped with a white marble statue of a soldier. White marble plaques are inset into each face of the pillar, which are inscribed with the names of those who served in the First World War. Servicemen who died during the war are listed together, on the plaque attached to the front face. The unveiling ceremony took place on 28 January 1922, in front of a large crowd. Several addresses were given by local officials and the memorial was unveiled by Lake Macquarie Shire Councillor J. Johnston
