Museum Hotel, West Wallsend

  • Museum Hotel, West Wallsend

    Creator: Unknown

The Museum Hotel was built by William Johnston, the first licensee, in 1889. His eldest daughter Margaret was a keen amateur taxidermist and produced a large collection of stuffed birds which were displayed in the hotel. This is the reason why the Museum came by that name. After the completion of the hotel, William Johnston built a large three story building adjacent to the hotel on Laidley Street which became known as the Museum Hall. It included shops and a hall and became a major meeting place for the towns residents. The Hotel and Hall were built in the busiest part of the town with the railway station, goods yard and the Tram terminus. The Johston's left in 1900, but the name and many of the stuffed birds remained.
