The following diary entry in relation to the Ritz Milk Bar was written by Newcastle resident John Cowley on Saturday 20th March 1937: "Worked in shop [his Dad's barber shop] all day. Went into town [Newcastle] to the Ritz milk bar with Ray." In another entry from Friday 21 May 1937, he wrote: "Went to scouts, played games for the most part. Went to the milk bar after." John was a teenager at the time and had emigrated with his family from England in 1927. His father, Ernie Cowley, was a barber and owned the barber shop with residence on the corner of Broadmeadow Road and Boreas Road, Broadmeadow. The building is still there but no longer a barber shop. Information supplied by Cheryl Dawes.
