Dulcie Beth Callinan began the Babaneek Choir in 1961 with the aim 'to bring cheer and comfort to its listeners, to provide joyful fellowship for all who love to sing and music for church services, civic occasions, charity functions and other areas where entertainment is needed.' The fifty plus members originally aged between 20 and 77, paid their own way and performed free of charge all year round, except for a six week duration over the Christmas/New Year and school holiday period.
