Lake Macquarie features many beautiful bays and beaches punctuated by rugged headlands and coastal bushland. With the lake as its centrepiece, it is only natural that Lake Macquarie is a mecca for watersports of all kinds, and has cultivated a number of outstanding aquatic sportsmen and women.
From swimming, sailing, fishing and diving to walking and picnicking, the Lake and surrounding beaches and bushlands attract thousands of residents and visitors each week in search of recreation and leisure, and have done so for more than a century.
Recreation has always played a large part in the history of Lake Macquarie from the early hunting and fishing parties which visited the lake, to the excursions by tram to Speers Point Regatta in the early 1900's, to the more recent attraction of the Fernleigh Track and all abilities playground.
