Lake Macquarie History

Wimbledon Grove

This Grove was named in 1950. It is believed to have been named forthe town of Wimbledon in the UK, famous for the tennis tournament of the same name. The forthcoming success of Australia at Wimbledon was foreshadowed and much touted in 1950 and 1951.

A Newcastle Morning Herald article from 11th January 1950 recorded that "The [Newcastle Council Works] committee agreed to a road giving access to Mr. A. MacLean's property at Cardiff being named Wimbledon Grove to remove confusion in the naming of the thoroughfare, which is known locally by several names. The name of the road, which traverses part of the City Council and Lake Maccquarie Shire Council's area, has already been approved by the shire council."
