Buttaba
The City Council of Lake Macquarie acknowledge the Aboriginal people known today as the Awabakal, as the traditional Custodians of the land, respecting Aboriginal Elders past, present and future. Lake Macquarie City Council recognise the local Aboriginal community today in all of their diversity, who came forward to share their experiences, knowledge, images and memories.
An Awabakal word meaning "the name of a hill on the margin of the lake" (Source: L.E. Threlkeld). Henry F Halloran named his 1920 subdivision Buttaba Hills, the design of which was influenced by the English Garden City Movement. Many of the original streets were named for localities in the UK, a significant number of which share mining and industry in common with Lake Macquarie and adjoining regions. There was a jetty at the Buttaba Hills Estate, located on the western side of Secret Bay, off Wrexham Circlet.
The status of suburb was assigned and boundaries were defined by the Geographical Names Board on 31 May 1991
