George Street
Said to be named after George V, who came to the throne in 1910. George Street was colloquially known as 'the front street'. The Community Hall is in the park. The park and along the waterfront were quite often filled with campers in times gone by. There were Blishen's tennis courts, Jack and Les Coates General Store, Stan Coates Hire Car, Ken Parnwell's small iron foundry, the sailing clubhouse, a plant nursery and silk flower manufacturer and the lake baths. The Advisory Committee was told by Council that George Street would be tar-sealed in 1964. The well-known TV personality Mike Leyland used to live in George Street.
