Lake Macquarie History

Ruttleys Road

An early-unnamed road, it was named after a property owner resident named James Ruttley, who had been a land grantee in 1891.

There has been some debate about the spelling of James Ruttleys surname.
James Rutley spelt with one T was in born Abergavenny, Wales 1/6/1856. His name spelt with one T appears on the Welsh census record 1861 (Ancestry com birth index for Wales).
His name is also spelt with one T on the NSW birth & death record for his 3yr old son (1885-1887)
After the above dates James Rutley appears to have changed the spelling to James Ruttley.
On the 1892 Parish map showing his allotment at Wyee, 1882 marriage certificate to Elizabeth and on his death certificate 18/1/1936 his surname is spelt Ruttley.
After his 1936 in an advertisement for the sale of his land at Wyee his surname is spelt Ruttley.
