Lake Macquarie History

Evans Park, Cardiff

Named after Jack Evans who was an early president of Cardiff Junior Soccer Club and instrumental in the establishment and development of the fields. The park was developed in the mid 1960s with the help of voluntary labour and raising funds conducting raffles etc. There are two soccer fields here now.

This park Is the home of Cardiff Junior Soccer Club. The junior soccer players separated from senior club around 1952 and established their own club. Junior matches were played for many years on the main field and number 2 field at Cardiff Oval. Increasing competition for playing times necessitated the junior club establishing its own field.

The land was originally an orchard owned by Mr. Finegan locally known as Finegans paddock. He grew plums, apples and probably peaches. It was leased from Lake Macquarie Shire Council for use as sporting fields in the early 1960s. Jack Evans was President of Cardiff Junior soccer club at the time and Les Huff was the Secretary. Construction contacts were made for the two fields to be developed. A grant of £2000 from the Joint Coal Board enabled the purchase of a hut from the old Rathmines Air Base which was relocated to Myall Road as a Clubhouse.
