Lake Macquarie History

Lisle Carr Oval, Whitebridge

With a Coal Board Grant, Lisle Carr worked to get the soccer field built. He was the caretaker for 20 years. Much of the steel frame of the grandstand at Lisle Carr Oval was constructed from recycled steel from Lambton Colliery.

From The Post newspaper, 17 June 1992:

Lights and a new name. With the recent switching on of lights for the season by Charlestown MLA Richard Face, Whitebridge soccer field became the Lisle Carr Oval.

The upgrading of the lights has been finished for some time, but the official switching on had been held back until a suitable occasion.

The project cost of about $30,000 was kept to this figure by an enormous amount of voluntary work done by the club, Mr Face said at last week's ceremony.

In addition, Highfields Azzurri Club was granted a further $15,000 in the last round of the Sport and Recreation Capital Assistance Grants, which will be matched on a dollar for dollar basis by Lake Macquarie City Council. This will be used for the construction of seating facilities at Lisle Carr Oval, and knowing the club as I do, I am sure that they will stretch that grant to complete the project to a degree far above expectations, Mr Face said.
