Lake Macquarie History

Lake Street

Built alongside of Stony Creek, Lake Street is thought to have been named late in the nineteenth century. The Stony Creek Swimming Club began in 1930 until 1980. Associated with the club were, bathing sheds, a clubhouse, and suspended electric lights for night training. The club was closed because of pollution in the creek. The Toronto Zoo was here during the 1950's on a six-acre property owned by Jack Cain. He purchased old Catalina flying boats that were to be made into holiday accommodation units. There were several accidents here at the railway level crossing.
