    Mr Walter J Donnelly held the license of the Toronto Hotel for 25 years. He arrived in Melbourne in 1867 where he was attracted to the Victorian gold fields. He then moved to the Gulgong and Ovens diggings then to the Palmer diggings in Queensland. He returned south in 1875 and prospected Barrington, Moonan Brook and Fullers Reef. In 1877 he arrived in Newcastle and was in the employ of a well known engineering firm. In 1899 Mr Donnelly took over the Toronto Hotel and Pleasure Grounds. In 1922 he sold his holding to Tooheys Ltd. He travelled twice around the world in his retirement.
