At the time of World War 1 there were about 30 to 60 houses in Redhead.

The typical accommodation at the time was the miners cottage, examples

of which still exist in Cowlishaw Street, Redhead.

The traditional owners of the land around the Redhead area were the

Awabakal people. The Awabakal Nature Reserve containing seven

ecosystems is a current example of the environment faced by these

original land managers and which influenced their lifestyle.

Coal mines including those at Redhead had developed along the train line

from Newcastle. This meant that the miners, especially those from Wales

and England had populated areas around the mines. At the time of World
