The Battle at Loos was an early lesson in battle tactics NOT to be applied
on the Western Front; a lesson not learnt by the overall command, to the
Australians’ detriment at Fromelles and Pozieres. Not only were all the
elements against them but their inexperience was exploited by seasoned
German troops. Unfortunately, while our battalions undertook a lot of
training, it seemed to be based on marching, saluting and individual
heroism.
