SPECIAL TERMS
To fully understand the language use in this text it is important that we
understand certain terms used by historians to describe the war.
Armistice
Truce before the signing of a peace treaty.
Atomised
Vaporized, completely dissolved and destroyed.
Census
An analysis of certain features of a country’s
population. e.g. total population, citizens born
overseas.
Conscription
Government forcing their citizens into army
service.
Counter-Attack
An attack commenced immediately after another
opposition attack is completed.
Dressing Station
A place to where soldiers are brought to have
their wounds assessed and “dressed” ie.
bandaged.
Enlistment
Joining up in the armed forces.
Kaiser
German king.
Looting
Stealing of other’s property.
Mortar
A weapon that could project a explosive with a
high trajectory and directed to land on the top of
a trench causing maximum damage.
Mutiny
The refusal to obey a senior rank’s command.
Offensive
A major combined forces and weapon attack.
Parapet
Protective roof over a trench.
Pillbox
Small concrete sheltered protection.
Referendum
A vote of all citizen’s for or against a certain
issue.
Sapper
A soldier who dug mines and trenches often
without the knowledge of the opposition
Shrapnel
Metal pieces that fly in different directions on
impact or detonation of a shell. It causes much
widespread damage.
Sniper
Soldier hidden and able to shoot unaware
opposition soldiers.
Strategy
Planned attack to suit situation.
Stretcher Bearer
A soldier who volunteered to carry wounded
soldiers back for medical attention.
