MATTERS TO NOTE.
1) Overall the long distance from Australia, firstly, to Gallipoli, and
the Middle East, then to Europe;
2) The isolation of Australia, that made it both protected from
European intervention, but vulnerable to a European naval power
like Germany. The route undertaken by transport ships taking
troops to Gallipoli and Europe was kept secret for fear that German
military ships would sink the transports and their soldier cargoes.
3) The relative short distances between the opponents in Europe;
4) Germany’s need to fight on two Fronts;
5) The short distance across the English Channel to Europe;
6) The opportunity for soldiers to bond as a group of young men that
could either make them a better fighting unit or a group of
adventurers travelling to exotic places they hadn’t been before;
